Pedigree analysis can be extremely daunting even on a 5 generation pedigree chart. How do we interpret a pedigree, how do the names all fit together and what does it all mean?
Interpreting pedigrees is a learned skill, but anyone is capable of learning some of the basic principles - and it can add an entirely new dimension to your breeding programme, your understanding and can even ignite your passion for breeding. I suggest going through the genetics and the balanced breeding sections of the website first, working down to analysing pedigrees - to become familiar with the terminology and structure references.
Think of it like learning to ride a horse, how daunting it was to start with, and how many years you were prepared to put into learning to ride. Learning to read pedigrees takes the same kind of commitment and it can be achieved with some determination
For looking at pedigrees I prefer to use AllBreedPedigree. This site allows you to look at pedigrees up to five generations for free and up to 9 for a small fee and this will be necessary as five generations is very limiting for viewing patterns. I find the allbreed pedigree site is much easier to view extended generations all in one condensed page .
Do not use Horse Telex for this because it highlights both parents of a duplicated horse. This can make it very difficult to see what you are actually looking at. The Allbreed site will only highlight the dams name of a duplicated stallion or mare if the mare has more than one of her progeny present in the pedigree
The Allbreed site is a wonderful resource - but it relies on users to add pedigrees. This means users can also unwittingly change pedigrees, so they become inaccurate. Therefore, it is very important to always cross reference accuracy on horse telex or sporthorsedata, or breed registration papers. Once you have been looking at pedigrees for a while you become familiar with many of the bloodlines and will know if they have been changed, but while you are learning, always check accuracy - this is extremely important
I will show five generation pedigree charts here - but I recommend if I am talking about dominances further back in my article section, that you follow along on the allbreed site and look up it up, and make sure that you understand, and can see where the duplications are. This is the only way to learn - there is no point just reading along with what I say, you must look at the pedigrees and make sure you understand the various factors. It is like learning to ride a horse - you are not going to learn just by watching or reading about it
Basic terminology
Stallions are in a blue colour and mares in a pink colour area.
I like allbreed for looking up pedigrees because where an ancestor is duplicated, that horse will appear with its own colour code bar to the right of its name. So, if Donnerhall appears 3 times he will always appear in the same colour. If a pedigree has 4 different ancestors duplicated in 5 generations, each ancestor will have its own colour which makes it easier to see and follow.
Balanced Breeding Terms - see this link for discussions on general principles - colt and filly factors, sex balanced linebreeding, inbreeding, linebreeding and outcrossing.
Pedigree position
This is denoted by numbers, such as 4 x 4, meaning the ancestor appears twice on the 4th generation. Similarly means the 3 x 6 means the horse is duplicated on the 3rd and 6th generations.
Pedigrees should be read top to bottom - so below in Capitol 1's pedigree, Ramzes daughters appear three times at 3 x 2 x 3 - Vase, Retina, and Vase again on the bottom tail line
The following examples are five generation pedigree charts of horses that show a reasonable number of duplications within five generations - it is easier to see them on a chart this size. Make sure you see and understand the duplications, which generation they are on and how they are presented.
The first generation starts with the parents, not the horse itself

Top jump sire Capitol I – He is 2 x 1 to son and daughter of the mare Vase - the son is Grand Vikar and the daughter is Folia. He also exhibits daughters of a sire - He has 3 daughters of the stallion Ramzes – both sides of the pedigree, and the daughters are Vase and Retina (moving top to bottom) at 3 x 2 x 2

Sky Diamond is an example of inbreeding to top mare Loretta (the dam of Sandro Hit).
He is 2 x 1 to a son and daughter of Loretta . The son is Sandro Hit and the daughter is Loreana. There is sex balanced line breeding to Donnerhall at 3 x 3 via son Don Schufro and the daughter Contenance D.

Hot Hit is an example of a horse out of an inbred dam. Inbred dams are extremely useful as broodmares and they give a breeder a lot of room in stallion choices.
The dam Las Palmas is 2 x 3 to Loretta via a son and daughter. The son is Diamond Hit and the daughter is full sister to Sandro Hit – La Traviata.
This is close inbreeding to top producing mare Loretta and it has produced a great result in this instance
Donnerhall is also present at 4 x 4 but via sons only, De Niro and Don Schufro.
Sons of a sire are not ideal, but the heavy inbreeding to female Loretta is a counterbalancing factor and will provide a type of remote sex balance in itself.
"A pedigree can stand something bad if it also has something good" Clive Harper

Franklin shows sex balanced line breeding to Ferro at 3 x 2 – via a son and a daughter.
Rousseau is a son of Ferro and dam Warkle is a daughter of Ferro.
Then there are 2 daughters of sire Flemmingh at 3 x 3 – Larivola and Sparkle.
And at 5 x 5 x 4 - daughters of the sire Farn – Brenda, Arivola and Brenda again.
Franklin is an inbred sire. Even from the beginning of his stallion career, he has been stamping foals with good type and movement. He is inbred to bloodlines that have been very successful in sport and have proven to be superior ancestors to duplicate in pedigrees.
In fact, Franklin's sire Ampere and his dam Warkle have 50% of their bloodlines in common and can be considered to also be three quarter siblings even though they are not genetically related on their motherline. This is an example of what patterns of breeding look like - with the same group of horses each side of the pedigree

Trakehners are a closed studbook and so are quite useful for showing linebreeding and inbreeding up to 5 generations. Herbstkonig's five generation pedigree chart shows that at 3 x 3 he is inbred both sides of the pedigree to the full brothers Mahogoni and Marlon. Both by Pasteur, they are sons of the mare Maharani II.
The sire Interconti has Mahagoni appearing via a daughter Irene VI - the dam has Marlon appearing via a son Timber.

This stallion is 3 x 2 to Donnerhall via two daughters, Dawina and Maradonna. Daughters of a sire are important for sport and for breeding stock.
If we go out to the 6th generation we can see perhaps the most important element in Furstenball- He is 4 x 6 to the top sport progenitors Furioso II and full brother Mexico.
This is an example as to why a 5 generation pedigree chart is so limiting in determining what the real powerlines in a particular horse are.
What is also important is that Mexico is coming in via a daughter Mexicane - which can be seen as the last name on the falling dam line on the 5th generation
Mexico is rarely seen via his daughters, only his sons - so having a daughter of Mexico here provided sex balanced linebreeding to these important full brothers and enables the full impact of these brothers to be available to not only Furstenball himself but to his progeny. The "F" Line stems from Furioso II so this element is a balance to all of these lines.

Cord De La Breyer is at 4 x 3 x 4 via two sons and one extremely important daughter - the sons are Caletto I and Calypso II And the daughter Desiree VII brings the line into sex balance.
This could well be the main reason why Chacco Blue has been such an important sire - the bloodline of Cor de La Breyer is overwhelmingly seen by his sons only. Any stallion carrying a rare daughter line to a bloodline mainly present through sons only is going to have an enormous impact in the breeding shed.
As well as the all-important Corde daughter, he also has a quite rare Ladykiller daughter – another bloodline mainly seen via sons only. Ladykiller is at 5 x 5 both sides, once through son Lord and through daughter Cita.
Having a Cord daughter and a Ladykiller daughter in Holstein is pretty much a guarantee of success.
He also has at 5 x 5 Raimond - sex balanced via daughter Nikola and son Ramiro Z.

It's not hard to see why sire Contender came in with a bang and had an immediate effect in Holstein, leaving an enormous legacy of top international competitors, stallion sons and breeding mares.
He is out of a Ramiro / Ladykiller mare –two bloodlines which largely occurred at that time via sons only - Just providing a sex balance, as in Chacco Blue, to bloodlines that only usually appear via one sex can guarantee a stallion’s success at stud.
Looking at both halves of the pedigree, Contendro is 3 x 4 x 4 to Ramiro via a son and 2 daughters - The daughter is Gofine and the sons are Rinaldo and Rasputin.
The all-important Ladykiller is 4 x 5 via daughter Cita and son Landgraf.
Ramzes is 5 x 5 x 5 via son Raimond on the sire’s side, and via 2 daughters on the dam side, Marion and Ute.
both sides of the pedigree are showing the same pattern - Ramiro / Ladykiller / Ramzes - in different configurations

NEEDS PEDIGREE
This stallion is an example which shows inbreeding to mares within 5 generations. It is very easy to see that at 2 x 1 he has 2 daughters of the top mare Pik Bube’s girl – Ramina and Larissa. Wherever you see a mares name highlighted like this it is a good idea to pay close attention, and both daughters occur on the falling tail female line of each pedigree half.
This is a very important position for MtDNA and special characteristics passed on the X chromosome.
Pik Bubes Girl was top mare in Germany in her day and her progeny and that of her dam Juwel and grandam Ballade have produced many international horses and stallions. She is an example of a top producing mare that can be built into our pedigrees of today.

Estobar is a good example of sex balanced line breeding on both sides of the pedigree.
He is 2 x 4 to Ehrensold via son Ehrentusch and daughter Elona. He is 3 x 5 to Rheingold via 2 daughters – Rheinfee and Raute. Dam Florence is also 4 x 5 to Furioso II but via sons only -Freigraf and Fidelio.

Top stallion Fidertanz shows sex balanced linebreeding to Romadour II at 5 x 4 via son Rheingold and daughter Romana. And 5 x 5 to son and daughter of Pik As xx, the daughter is Dilgerelfe and the son is Pik Koenig - we need 6 generations to view this factor
In this way his dam has managed to make meaningful connections to the sire line.

Furst Bishof is a good example of how full siblings appear in a pedigree. He is 4 x 4 to full brother and sister Winston and Walinga. This is a very powerful position for siblings and you can see both parents names are highlighted. Even better, they are from the highly influential Daffy-Toban mare that can be found in many top sport and breeding pedigrees. There is also sex balanced line breeding to Furioso II at 5 x 4 via son Fidelio and daughter Fleur. Rosenkavalier is at 4 x 4 but via sons only.

Graf Grannus is 4 x 3 x 4 to Gotthard, sex balanced. The daughter is Gitta and the son is Goldlowe.
The dam had 2 sons of Gotthard and sire Grannus came in and added a simple sex balance with a daughter line of Gotthard which turned the entire thing around - sometimes it can just be this simple.
He is 5 x 5 x 4 x 5 to Goldfisch sons only.

Graf Top is a good example of how simply adding a line of the ancestor the sire is inbred to - can work
His sire Graf Grannus is inbred to the sire Gotthard and his dam Capries makes a meaningful connection to this sire with another Gotthard daughter .
Graf top has been a very successful breeding stallion.
He has Gotthard at 5 x 4 x 5 x 3 both sides.

Lissabon - stallion 1999
Lissabon again shows full siblings both sides of the pedigree
He is 4 x 4 x 4 to the full brothers Calypso I and Calypso 11.
Full brothers in a pedigree are excellent for stallions - especially in a configuration like this - 3 times on the fourth generation and both sides of the pedigree
These full brothers are presented in a sex balanced way, via 2 daughters and a son. The daughters are Uta V and Sofia and the son is Contender.
Ramiro is also present via two daughters at 5 x 5, Gundel and Gofine .
Both pedigree halves show the same pattern - one of the full brothers and a Ramiro daughter and patterns add to the producing power of the stallion

Quaterhit is an example of a stallion inbred to daughters of a mare
He is 3 x 1 to daughters of the mare Poesie – Passionata and Poetin III.
Poesie is not just any mare, she is the dam of 17 foals including Samba Hit 1 – V and Poetin, young World Horse Champion sold for a record sum.
As she has produced so many top class horses and established a dynasty all on her own she is probably carrying special sex linked genes on her X chromosome and superior mtDNA.
Having Poesie here on the falling dam line (tail female) in the most powerful position in the pedigree is to be noted.

This is a very young stallion not yet available in Australia. I am going to make a prediction that if given the opportunity with enough mares he is going to be a very important producer of top horses
It is rare to see pedigrees like this - because they happen so rarely by chance
Has daughters of Rubin Royal at 2 x 2 - Prime Time and Residenz
And has daughters of the mare Parabel II at 4 x 4 - Paraboise and Pamina.
It is an example of each side of the pedigree showing the same pattern - Rubin Royal and daughters of mare Parabel II.

He is 2 x 3 to son and daughter of great mare Ganseliesel, via Beltain and Wolkenstein II.
